Toptex Hay & Straw Covers – Your Questions Answered
By Agritel – UK supplier of premium crop protection solutions

When it comes to protecting hay and straw outdoors, Toptex covers are trusted by farmers across the UK for their strength, breathability, and long-lasting performance. But with different sizes, fixing methods, and stack locations to choose from, it can be tricky to know exactly what you need.

We’ve pulled together this Frequently Asked Questions guide to help you choose the right cover, secure it properly, and get the best results.

1. What size Toptex cover do I need?
Choosing the right size depends on the number of bales you want to store and how you stack them.

Round bales:

9.8 x 12.5m – 80 5ft bales (stacked 4,3,2,1)

9.8 x 25m – 120 5ft bales (stacked 3,2,1)

12 x 25m – 200 5ft bales (stacked 4,3,2,1)

Square Bales:

12 x 25m – 322 square bales with 9 round bales (round bales to be placed at the top of the stack to create an angle for the rain to run down the sheet)

💡 Tip: Always allow some extra fabric for draping over the sides. A slightly bigger cover is easier to work with than one that’s too tight.

2. What’s the best way to secure my Toptex cover?
A well-secured cover will shed rain effectively and won’t flap in the wind. Agritel recommends:

Agritel Toptex Fixing Pins – quick and reusable, a steel pin with red disc that goes through the sheet and keeps it taught. Remember these will have to be re-tensioned once the bales have shrank or after very strong winds.

Agritel Fixing Tape Kit – With 15m of industrial grade velcro tape, 15 gravel bags and 15 carbine hooks, you won’t need to re-tension your sheet, as these will be constantly be under the weight of the gravel bags pulling the sides of the Toptex downwards. Just cut your tape to meter lengths and place in a V shape around the sides of the Toptex, fill your gravel bags and hang from the tape, simple and easy, no need to re-tension after strong winds.

💡 Tip: Avoid using sharp hooks or bare wire, as these can damage the breathable fabric.

3. Where should I place my bale stack?
Correct stack placement is as important as the cover itself:

Choose a well-drained site – avoid low spots where water pools.

Orient the stack with the prevailing wind – this helps the breathable Toptex fabric work effectively to prevent condensation.

Avoid overhanging trees – falling leaves and branches can damage the cover.

Leave space around the stack – allows air circulation and easy access for loading/unloading.

💡 Tip: If possible, stack bales on pallets, tyres, or a hardcore base to keep the bottom row dry.
