No 4 Regent’s Park – Mercy Ships Fundraiser Counts Down!

Sunday 13th August saw Agritel Director Brenda Duffus complete the fourth of six 10k races she is running to raise funds for the Linda Butler Bursary to aid Mercy Ship UK volunteers.

Friend and Rotarian Linda Butler passed away unexpectedly in June 2016 and the Rotary Club of Oswestry Borderland decided to commemorate past President Linda by establishing a bursary to help support people who want to volunteer for a tour of duty for Mercy Ships, as Linda had on two occasions. Naturally the bursary requires funding, and Brenda agreed to raise sponsorship to support the fund whilst running her six 10k races.

The Mercy Ships’ vessel Africa Mercy is like a small city, requiring a crew of more than 400 volunteers from over 40 nations to keep it running. As well as medical and dental professionals, the ship’s complement includes cooks, teachers, receptionists, mechanics, engineers and information technology specialists.  Placements range from two weeks to two years, depending on the role.

All volunteers are required to raise their own funds to cover travel to and from the ship, crew fees, insurance and personal expenses. Linda’s memorial bursary provides financial assistance for individuals who are prepared to spend a month of their time on Africa Mercy, helping Mercy Ships deliver life-saving medical care free of charge to some of the world’s poorest people.
